Science in Health Public Lecture Series

The highly successful Science in Health Public Lecture Series is now in its sixteenth year and attracts a diverse audience of interested individuals including the public, secondary school pupils and professionals

The lectures are FREE to attend, no booking is required. There will be opportunities for sixth-form students to meet with some of the speakers before the lectures.

In this lecture our very own Dr Jonathan Tyrell presents his lecture ‘Antibiotic Resistance: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

Antibiotic-resistant is now THE major threat facing global public health. No new class of antibiotics has been discovered in 30 years, and with the effectiveness of our current drugs reducing at an alarming rate, we are now entering a post-antibiotic world where treatment of even basic infections may no longer be an option. It is estimated that, by 2050, 10 million lives may be at risk from resistant infections.

Enter the microbial world and witness the many ways by which bacteria may evolve and mutate to become antibiotic resistance. Understand the role that humans have played on a personal, social, political and economic level in driving this evolution, and the spread of resistance across the globe, but also the strategies now implemented to fight the problem. Learn the ways in which YOU can contribute, as we discuss the common misconceptions surrounding infection and antibiotic prescription.

All this and more as we delve into the good, the bad and the ugly of antibiotic resistance!

There will be a question and answer session at the end of the lecture - questions are welcomed in both English and Welsh.
