The School has three Research Units:
European Governance, Identities and Public Policies
The Research Unit on European Governance, Identities and Public Policies is primarily interested in issues of continuity and change in the politics, policies and societies of the leading European nations. As a unit, we seek to promote world-class standards in 'leading-edge' research that draws together comparative European politics and policies, European area studies, and processes of European integration and Europeanization. We aim to understand and explain changes within and across European nations, particularly in relation to the design and delivery of public policies, in relation to European political and governance processes, and in the construction of identities.

Languages, Cultures & Ideologies
Launched in 2011, the Languages, Cultures & Ideologies (LCI) research unit collectively coordinates and promotes the development and presentation of members’ research in French, German, Italian, Hispanic Studies, translation studies and ideology critique. Members of the LCI group share research interests in the rich and fertile intersections of literature, culture, and national identity. Our research engages with metropolitan narratives and histories, as well as the regional and global reach of languages and cultures, such as French and Spanish, and adopts transnational perspectives that investigate the legacies of colonialism and decolonisation within and beyond the boundaries of the state.

Political Theory Research Unit
The Political Theory Research Unit which centres on the work of six staff, although smaller than the School’s other units, constitutes a concentration of expertise that is unusual in a national context. Indeed, Cardiff’s strength in this sub-discipline of Politics is unique in comparison with other UK Schools of European Studies and very unusual in Politics Departments. The unit takes advantage of this to undertake research and to produce individual and collaborative publications and projects that are of world class, and in many instances are world leading and research agenda setting. Our many postgraduate political theory students are also centrally involved in the work of the unit.
