The study of diasporic media has grown significantly during the past two decades and moved from questions related to the role of media in the formation of communities to issues raised by the study of particular media; for example: “How do particular media contribute to the construction, mediation and adoption of [a group’s] identity?” (Dayan 1999). During the last year, our research group analysed two newspapers oriented towards new communities of immigrants recently settled in Spain, “Si Se Puede” and “Latino”, and we concentrated on the study of cultural politics, gender politics and public/media sphere. In this paper, I offer preliminary results about the way these two newspapers construct and mediate the cultural identity of Latin American migrants through discourses about the ethnic, the religious and the POP music. We can somehow understand that these three elements are used to define the mainstream as a common Latin American culture that do not question the global hegemonic project.
