My thesis looks at the films of Andrei Tarkovsky through the work of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. My project engages with recent literature on the role of memory, time and spirituality in Deleuze’s philosophy. It also considers the role of the Second World War in the emergence of a modern Soviet cinema.
Soviet cinema; Deleuze; memory studies; European cinema; European new waves in cinema.
