Dr Joanne Sayner

Dr Joanne Sayner completed her PhD at Cardiff University in 2002. Her doctoral thesis was entitled ‘Frauen Haben Keine Vergangenheit Oder Haben Keine zu Haben? Depictions of facism in Womens Autobiographies in German’.
Dr Sayner is currently a lecturer in Cultural Theory and German Studies at the University of Birmingham; teaching undergraduate history and language classes within the German department, and contributing to European Studies courses. Her research interests focus on women's writing, the politics of remembrance and feminist theory. Particular areas of interest are gendered memories of Nazism and how debates about the past inform contemporary German society. Focusing on questions of autobiography and identity her research combines literary historical and cultural studies approaches. She has recently completed a book on women's writing and fascism.
