Vehicular Access
The John Percival Building can be accessed from Colum Road, turning onto Colum Drive (click here to view a map of Cathays). There is a barrier to access the Colum Drive Site which is operated with a University ID card. There is an intercom at the barrier and a security lodge close by if assistance is required. The security lodge telephone number is 029 2087 6717.
Once through the barrier, follow the road to the right and the John Percival building is ahead on the right.
Pedestrian Access
From Corbett Road, follow the path past the Arts and Social Studies Library, where there is a short and slightly steep slope, then a flat path leading to the main entrance.
From Colum Drive and the car park, follow the path between the Arts and Social Studies Library and the John Percival Building. This path has a very slight gradient. There is an accessible side entrance door (see entrances below) very close to the accessible parking bays.
Parking Information

There are 3 accessible parking bays and 5 visitor parking bays along Colum Drive, very close to the John Percival Building entrance.
Main and Side Entrances

There is level access (with a very slight incline) and automatic sliding doors at the Main entrance of the John Percival Building (left photograph above).
The side accessible entrance (right photograph above), is located next to an accessible parking bay.
There is a small ramp leading up to the side entrance door.
The side entrance door can only be opened with an approved university identification card. If you require access through this door, please contact your tutor or manager.
The card reader is positioned at an accessible height for wheelchair users.
Toilet Facilities

There is a newly refurbished unisex accessible toilet on the ground floor (0.16A), within the refectory. There are also unisex accessible toilets on the first floor (1.65), on the third floor (3.55), on the fourth floor (4.22) and on the fifth floor (5.27).
There are male and female standard cubicle toilets on all floors.
Lifts
There are three lifts in the John Percival Building. Two lifts are situated close to the Coulum Drive exit door. Both lifts have mirrors on the back wall and floor levels are indicated by audio and visual means. These lifts service ground to the fourth floors.
The third lift is situated close to the refectory on the ground floor, opposite the Welsh for Adults Centre. This lift has mirrors on all sides, a handrail and services ground to the fifth floors. This lift might not be suitable for all types or wheelchairs as it is the smallest lift in the building.
There is a platform stair lift between the fourth and fifth floors for those who do not wish to use the third lift.
Coffee Shop
The John Percival Building has a coffee shop on the ground floor, a large seating area and vending machines. The coffee shop is located by the main entrance to the building.
Emergency Evacuation
The emergency exit route is clearly labelled (the green running man). Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the exits and exit routes.
If you think you might require assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation, you must arrange a Personalised Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) as soon as possible. Students must contact their School Disability Contact to arrange a PEEP. Staff will need to contact their School / Division Disability Contact or manager to arrange a PEEP. Please remember that it is your responsibility to inform the relevant person that you require a PEEP to be set up.
In an emergency evacuation the lifts must not be used. For anyone unable to safely evacuate using the stairs, there are safe refuge points located in every stair well on each upper floor. Refuge points are sign posted. When at the refuge point, you must use the phones, which go directly to Security when picked up. You must inform Security of your location and that you require assistance. Security will communicate information to you in relation to what is happening and reassure you. You must remain in the refuge area until advised otherwise or someone comes to your assistance. Refuge points are located such as to provide a safe area for at least 30 minutes in the event of a real fire.
