Civil Engineering (BEng/MEng)

Civil Engineers design, construct and maintain such things as roads, bridges, airports, flood and coastal defences, tunnels, water supply schemes and dams. Civil Engineers are also employed in aircraft design, ship building and the oil industry. Some follow alternative careers in management consultancy, information technology, accountancy and the legal profession.

Typically, as a Civil Engineer you would be in involved in one of three basic areas of activity. First, there is the consultant who uses expertise and creative skills to produce various designs, the most appropriate of which is then passed onto a contractor, representing the second area, who is responsible for turning the design into the actual object. The final area is conservation and maintenance of both structures and the environment. For example, listed buildings and other structures require constant attention to protect them against deterioration; also as a Civil Engineer you will be central to the drive for environmentally sensitive design and sustainable development.
