Career and Future Opportunities

Why do Engineering?

The essence of Engineering is problem solving. The problems relate to the real world and involve a high element of creativity. For example if you do something like driving to a supermarket: who designed the car; who designed the roads and bridges; who helped design and build the supermarket? Cars are full of mechanical and electrical/ electronic devices. They are complex products. The bridges you drive over and under are likewise everyday but highly sophisticated structures. The people who design and manage the manufacturing / construction of every high technology object or artefact that we use are engineers.

People often say that scientists put a man on the moon. One often hears the phrase "rocket science". The truth is that NASA largely employs engineers. Engineers put man on the moon and engineers design rockets. Scientists basically study the universe in all its complexity and detail and explain how it works. Engineers use that knowledge to create the things that enable us to move about and live in comfort in that universe.

If you enjoy science and mathematics, have a flair for design and creativity and enjoy problem solving, then engineering could be for you.

If you want to:

  • assist in dealing with climate change and solving the energy problem
  • help clean up the planet and provide a more sustainable lifestyle
  • provide better telecommunications
  • design cars
  • build bridges or dams
  • help the third world
  • develop new, faster planes
  • design, develop and maintain life saving medical equipment
  • work in teams with other professionals
  • have the opportunity to travel and work in other countries
  • have a rewarding and well paid career

then engineering is for you.
