Working with Industry

The School is at the forefront of engineering research and this means that links with industry are embedded in our teaching programmes and our research.

The School has an Industrial Advisory Board made up of top industrialists from a wide range of companies and organisations. The Advisory Board provides advice on activities across the School from teaching content to research issues. Our undergraduate degree programmes have a strong industrial element. Regular accreditation by the professional engineering bodies means that all our degrees have an industrial component and students are encouraged to work on projects which have an industrial element in their third or fourth year. In addition, our BEng and MEng programmes can all be taken with a Year in Industry, where students spend a year of their degree working (and being paid a salary) in a relevant company or organisation. Students are also encouraged to undertake summer placements and we have numerous companies wanting to offer summer work to our students. This can lead to sponsorship or even employment on graduation. Our postgraduate MSc programmes also have strong industrial elements and many of the research projects are carried out in collaboration with, or even within, external companies or organisations. This allows students to gain industrial experience and to investigate and develop career opportunities. As you would expect from a School conducting internationally renowned, high quality research, many of our staff work closely with industry on a wide range of research and consultancy projects. Research students have numerous opportunities to engage with companies and to work on real industrial problems. The following are just a few examples of the companies and organisations that are involved in our teaching and research activities:
