Course Aims

General Aims

  • To provide advanced study which will be at, or informed by, the forefront of both the academic and professional elements of the water engineering discipline.
  • To provide a sound scientific, technical and commercial understanding of water engineering issues and practice.
  • To advance recognition of the diverse nature of water engineering through the integration of knowledge from hydrology, environmental hydraulics, water management and water quality.
  • To advance and enhance engineering theory and practice in the context of the management of water engineering challenges, through the development of new skills at a high level.
  • To promote originality in the application of knowledge and an understanding of how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research.
  • To provide training in engineering research methods and to develop a range of related transferable skills.
  • To provide training in the direct application of knowledge to the assessment and solution of water engineering challenges, encouraging students to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively and to show originality in tackling both familiar and unfamiliar problems.
  • To produce professional and highly proficient engineers to work in the field of water engineering.

Educational aims

  • To develop an enhanced understanding of the engineering behaviour of surface water systems.
  • To promote appreciation of the interaction between water quality, water chemistry and surface water biology.
  • To introduce advanced techniques and analysis methods in environmental water management.
  • To promote awareness of the role of numerical modelling in examining, understanding and predicting the behaviour of water engineering systems, drawing on an understanding of the underlying processes and a knowledge of the characteristics of particular systems.
  • To provide opportunities for additional masters level study in selected specialist areas in water engineering.
  • To provide opportunities to develop an appreciation of the principles and activities involved in the day to day management of engineering business units, typical of those within which water engineering is practiced.
