Arts and Humanities Research Council Studentships (AHRC) –

Cardiff holds Block Grant Partnership (BGP) studentships and invites applications in the following subject areas for study commencing 2012/13:

Doctoral
English Language and Literature
Philosophy

Research Preparation Masters
English Language and Literature.

If you wish to apply for an AHRC award you must first apply for and be accepted on an MA or PhD programme within the School of English, Communication and Philosophy by Friday 24 February 2012.

The deadline for the full AHRC application (Parts I and II, completed by the applicant and the referees), along with supporting documents, must be submitted to the School AHRC contact (Rhian Rattray - email: encap-pg@cardiff.ac.uk - room 2.67) by Friday 2 March 2012.

J.E. Williams studentship (applicable to Cardiff University graduates only)

This three-year studentship is available to PhD or MPhil students commencing their studies in the 2012/13 academic year.  The studentship is open to Cardiff graduates only who wish to study at Cardiff or another UK University; the terms of the bequest require the University to prioritise those wishing to study at Oxford University.  The endowment fund covers 100% costs for PhD or MPhil (fees and stipend).  Please email encap-pg@cardiff.ac.uk for an application form, which must be completed and returned by the deadline 20 February 2012.  To be considered for an award you must be in receipt of an offer of a place on a PhD or MPhil programme by the deadline of 20 February.

 

ESRC Studentships in Language and Communication at Cardiff

The Centre for Language and Communication Research (CLCR) is able to support applications for ESRC PhD studentship funding, covering tuition fees for UK and EU students plus a generous stipend (fees-only for non-UK EU students), on a competitive basis within the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) Wales Consortium, led by Cardiff University. In order to be considered for a studentship, you need to apply for postgraduate study in the Centre for Language and Communication Research at Cardiff University. Application forms can be found at http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/for/prospective/pg/apply/sendingapplication/index.html.  Please note that there isn't a separate application form for the ESRC studentships and that all applicants with degree programme applications viewed strong enough will be considered for ESRC funding.

Cardiff University President’s Research Scholarships
The President's Research Scholarships

The University is making available 72 “flagship” postgraduate research awards which carry the prestige of association with the University’s new President, the Nobel Prize for Medicine (2007) winner, Professor Sir Martin Evans. A number of these awards are available for postgraduates seeking to research in the area of 'Re-constructing Multiculturalism'.

The (Re)-Constructing Multiculturalism funding competition for 2012/13 is now open. For 2012-13, there will be two ‘fees-only’ awards, and two ‘full’ awards (covering fees AND stipend). The competition is open to Home, EU and International students.

If you wish to apply for a President's Scholarship award you must formally apply for and be accepted onto a PhD programme in a Humanities School in Cardiff University by Friday 24 February 2012, submitted using the Online Application Service for the research programme agreed with the potential project supervisor. Applicants are advised to contact the School to discuss a potential project/supervisor via email at encap-pg@cardiff.ac.uk.

The deadline for the President's Scholarship funding application is Friday 2nd March 2012. Applications for funding must be submitted to Rhian Rattray, Postgraduate Manager in room 2.67 of the Humanities Building by that date.

Funding to support Postgraduate Researcher Initiatives, 2010-11

Postgraduate research students are invited to submit applications for funding (up to £1,000 per project) to support interdisciplinary academic activities in 2010-11 which will bring students together from different subject areas.

Activities that may be supported include: Themed forums to bring together students and research staff to discuss issues relating to an identified theme - themes should be wide enough to bring together cross-disciplinary representation. Reading Groups, Seminar Series, Workshops, Networking meetings, Conferences and short visits by scholars to Cardiff in association with a group’s events or activities
Projects must be organised by and for postgraduate research students and applicants must be registered for a research degree (MPhil, MRes or PhD).

D.M. Phillips Tylerstown Philosophy Prize (MA only)

This prize (approximately £2,000) is awarded on the basis of merit to a student (or students) who have completed an undergraduate degree in Philosophy at Cardiff University and who are pursuing MA study in Philosophy within the institution. The recipient should be studying Ethics, Metaphysics, Sociology or Psychology at postgraduate level.   The recipient(s) of this award are decided at the Philosophy Board of Studies each September.

Royal Institute of Philosophy-Jacobsen Fellowships and Bursaries (PhD only)

In accordance with the deed of trust made by the benefactor Mr. Jens Jacobsen, The Royal Institute of Philosophy offers annual fellowships for research in certain fundamental parts of philosophy. The 2011-12 fellowships, of £8,000 each in, are for one year and are open to PhD students.

The Royal Institute of Philosophy also offers bursaries of £2,500 which are open to PhD students pursuing any aspect of philosophy. These are for one year.

Professor URQ Henriques Scholarship Fund

This fund exists to support postgraduate research students from the School of  History, Archaeology and Religion, the School of European Studies and the School of English, Communication and Philosophy and is awarded in rotation between the Schools. According to the regulations of the Scholarship Fund, the next competition in ENCAP will be 2012–13.

 

Charles Coles Travelling Scholarships

There are three awards of £400 each and these are open to postgraduate students to support a programme of travel connected with their studies. Students can apply at any point during their programme of study but the application must be submitted well in advance of the proposed visit and must be submitted during the calendar year preceding the year in which the proposed visit is to take place. Travel must also be scheduled at an appropriate point during the programme of study.

Fulbright Scholarship

Each year between 10 and 16 awards are offered to UK citizens for the first year of postgraduate or doctoral study in any subject, at any accredited US institution.  Applicants must be a UK citizen (resident anywhere), and hold or expect to obtain a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree or the equivalent prior to your anticipated enrolment with a US university.

Kennedy Scholarships (For PhD students, occasionally 2 year Master progs.)

Offers attractive opportunities for graduate study or research in the USA at Harvard or MIT. About eight to ten Scholarships are awarded which cover tuition and health service fees, the cost of travel to and from the USA, and provide an allowance of $24,000 for the year plus an additional travel grant. Applicants must be British citizens at the time of application, who are also ordinarily resident in the UK, who have spent at least two of the last five years studying at a University in the UK and who have graduated before taking up their Scholarship. Candidates must make a separate and independent application for admission to Harvard and/or MIT.

Knox Fellowships

Frank Knox Fellowships offer full tuition fees and health insurance plus a generous stipend to British graduates who gain places at any of the Harvard graduate schools.   Further information about this year's competition is available at http://www.kennedytrust.org.uk/display.aspx?Id=1175&pid=0  Selected candidates will be invited to London for an interview in January 2012.

British Federation of Women Graduates Charitable Foundation Emergency Grants

The Charitable Foundation offers Emergency Grants to graduate women who face an unforeseeable financial crisis whilst engaged in study or research at institutions of higher education in Great Britain. These are one off payments to assist with the completion of an academic year’s work.
From January 2011 grants are not likely to exceed £2,500. All our grants are offered on a needs basis and therefore not all grants will be for £2,500. Applicants must be graduates undertaking doctoral study in Great Britain. http://ffwg.org.uk/

Reid Trust for the Higher Education of Women

Open to women educated in the United Kingdom who have appropriate academic qualifications and who wish to undertake further training or research in the United Kingdom. The funding is open to all subjects. There are normally 10-12 awards every year and they each provide between £250-£1000 in funding.

Wingate Scholarship

Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake pioneering or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value, and to outstandingly talented musicians for advanced training. These awards are designed to help with the costs of a specific project which may last up to 3 years. The average total award is about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000. Thomas and Elizabeth Williams Scholarship (MA and PhD)

This award is open to those who have been resident within the specified area for at least two years during the ten years immediately preceding the date of application: preference is given to the Llanelli/Kidwelly school districts. Applicants must be under 30 years of age at the date of application, and should possess a good honours degree (I or IIA), but under certain circumstances a lower second class honours may be considered. Grants are usually for up to £5,000 for the academic year, but there is a preference for those wishing to study in America, and grants for this can be as much as £8,000 for the academic year. James Pantyfedwen Foundation (all Welsh Students only, MA and PhD)

Clifford Garwood Prize

The prize is awarded annually to the student with the best performance in modules relating to Applied Linguistics. The recipient is decided at the Centre for Language and Communication Research Exam Board every June.

 

Minnie Watkins Fund

This fund allows small financial grants for academic purposes to be made to postgraduate students in the Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory, with preference given to students studying for the MA in Critical and Cultural Theory.

Deadline: Deadline to apply for this funding, shall be made public two months in advance.  The final decision is usually made in April/May of each year by the Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory Board of Studies.

 

The Dell Hymes Commendation

The award of a book to the PG student(s) with the best performance in sociolinguistics.

The recipient of this award is decided at the Centre for Language and Communication Research Board of Studies each June.

 

Victor Neo Prize

This prize is awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the MA in Critical and Cultural Theory.

The recipient is decided at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory Exam Board in autumn of each year.

 

Sir Julian Hodge Prize

(recipient decided in Oct/Nov)

This prize is awarded to the English Literature/Cultural Criticism student with the highest average mark in their BA degree.  The recipient must be registered for a higher degree in English Literature or the Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory at Cardiff University but, at the discretion of the Head of School, may be registered on another postgraduate scheme involving a significant amount of English Literature.
