Resistivity Survey, Svalbard 2005.

Resistivity Survey, Svalbard 2005.

Research focuses on environmental processes, environmental change and environmental protection on land and in the near-shore marine and coastal environments. Our remit includes fundamental research and applied studies, and we maintain close links with industry. Research areas in the terrestrial environment include; geomorphological process studies in mountain and arctic environments; the assessment of atmospheric, soil and groundwater pollution; hydrogeological modelling of contaminant migration; environmental applications of high resolution geophysics; and in the marine and coastal environments; applications of marine information, including mapping, charting and sea surveying; environmental management of marine resources; and integrated coastal and sea management. Funding is through Research Councils (NERC and EPSRC), European Union and related research agencies, Industry, government agencies and local authorities. Our work involves extensive international collaboration and collaboration with the University Schools of Engineering and Biosciences.

The Geoenvironmental Group is responsible for teaching two Masters courses: MSc in Applied Environmental Geology, and MSc in Environmental Hydrogeology. Industrial placements for masters students strengthen our industrial links.

The Geoenvironmental Group includes 10 Faculty, 4 Post Doctoral Research Fellows and 12 PhD students, together with over 40 Masters students.

The Marine and Coastal Environment

Research is focused on the marine geography and biology of the coastal and offshore environments. There is a strong emphasis on the development and conceptual understanding of marine geography; and applied science research concerned with marine survey – both hydrographic and ecological; environmental management of marine industries including ports and shipping; and integrated management and policy for coastal and marine areas at a variety of geographical scales, including Wales, the United Kingdom and Europe.

The group works in a number of Research Areas.

The Marine and Coastal Environment (MACE) Group is primarily responsible for teaching the Marine Geography (BSc). Thick sandwich industrial placement links exist with industry, government and the voluntary sector, and strengthen research links. There are currently over 150 students. There is a close working relationship with the Severn Estuary Partnership and the Wales Coastal and Maritime Partnership.
