Dr Fanny Garel

I am currently a NERC Post-Doctoral Research associate in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University and in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. I work with Rhodri Davies, currently at the Australian National University in Canberra, Saskia Goes in Imperial College and Huw Davies at Cardiff University.

My current research focuses on the dynamics of free subduction into the Earth's mantle using a 2D thermal model of mantle and lithospheric plates. The rheology is temperature- and strain rate-dependent, and gives rise to numerous feedbacks between the plate sinking into the mantle, and surface and deep deformation. The subduction trench is free to move, and we analyze surface plate motions as a function of the system parameters (age and strength of the plates, viscosity structure of the mantle).
