The role and communication of science within coastal decision-making is complex and not well understood. There are multiple actors and agendas, with 'governance' and 'knowlegde production' often operating within separate cycles. In the context of climate change adaptation, there is a need to integrate science with systems of adaptive management and associated societal learning and to move towards the multi-disciplinary approach of sustainability science. I will be investigating the factors influencing the scientific input into policy and related discourse on climate change adaptation, with particular reference to the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel.
