Polar Marine Diatom Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop

15 Apr 2013

Workshop Aims

PMDW

This workshop is a continuation of three previous Polar Marine Diatom Workshops held in Yamagata, Japan (2005); Nebraska, USA (2007); and Sydney, Australia (2011).  The workshop will provide the international community of polar diatom researchers with an opportunity to interact and discuss topical issues and new results that bear on recent and future research activities in the polar regions.  It will have a strong focus on the Neogene to Recent time period and taxonomic issues toward standardization of terminology and identifications – it will be interactive with many dedicated microscope sessions.  The workshop will allow students and early career researchers to interact with, and receive training and advice from leaders in the field and, as such, researchers at all stages of their careers are encouraged to attend.

In a nutshell, the workshop aims are to:

  • transfer sound taxonomic skills and exchange knowledge relative to modern and fossil diatoms of polar regions;
  • engage the international marine phytoplankton and palaeontological communities and raise the research profile and opportunity for on-going training of students and researchers.

The workshop supports the sound development of robust proxies for palaeoceanography, evolution of sea-ice communities, timing of climatic events in polar regions.

Registration
Registration is open until 12th May 2013.  Please fill out the Registration Form and the Payment Form and return both to Jenny Pike  (pikej@cardiff.ac.uk)  by the registration deadline.  Please note that registration is limited by available laboratory facilities so early registration is advised to avoid disappointment!

Travel Grants
IGBP PAGES have provided a number of Travel Awards for postgraduate students and early career researchers to attend the workshop.  For further information please download the Travel Award Application Form  and return the form to Jenny Pike  (pikej@cardiff.ac.uk)  by 12th May 2013.

Note that the British Phycological Society also provide travel grants to student members, who have been members for at least 3 months.

Travel to Cardiff
There are two main ways to get to Cardiff.  International flights can be taken either to London, or to Cardiff.  You will have to balance cost versus convenience.

1.  Flying to Cardiff involves a connection through Amsterdam, plus a bus/taxi to the city centre.  Taxis will cost approximately £30 (approximately 30-40 minutes depending on time of day).  Buses are cheaper but only run at certain times of day.  There are some direct flights from a few other European cities.

2.  Flights to London will be cheaper, but you will need to consider adding up to £100-£120 for inland travel.  There are 3 options: (1) direct bus (~4 hours from Heathrow to Cardiff; cheapest option); (2) bus to Reading, train from Reading to Cardiff (~2.5 hours, known as RailAir link, next cheapest option); and (3) Heathrow Express train to London, train from London to Cardiff (2 hours from central London to Cardiff).  If you chose the train option, book these tickets up to 3 months ahead and they will be considerably cheaper (perhaps over £100 saving).  Pre-booked train tickets can be picked-up at the station of departure from machines with a reference number and the purchase credit card.

More details will appear here in late April.
