Energetics of the Earth's mantle computed using data tomographic techniques on the departmental BEOWULF high performance computer cluster by senior MESci student Rhodri Davies as part of his research project. In the diagram the first 1500km of the mantle is removed. Blue is cold, red is hot, and the colour scale is linear. Isolated downwellings from the upper boundary layer dominate the planform. These appear to be linear features, which extend to a great depth. Convection also appears influenced by isolated upwellings, again linear in planform.
