He graduated from Birmingham University and moved to Imperial College, London for MSc and PhD degrees.

His research interests are concerned mainly with quantitative methods in structural geology. This research has resulted in 102 publications, including four textbooks. His recent book Modern Structural Geology (with John G Ramsay and published by Academic Press in 2000) is a research level primer on numerical modelling of geological structures. He is a member of the Folding Research Group, University of Oviedo, Spain. He has an interest in palaeostress analysis and has just edited (with T Blenkinsop) a special issue of the Journal of Structural Geology entitled New Dynamics in Palaeostress Analysis.

Professor Lisle is Chair of the Tectonic Studies Group. He has been an editor of the Journal of Structural Geology (1991-2002), and is presently a member of the editorial board.
