Sérgio joined the School in September 2008 as a Lecturer in Engineering Geoscience from the School of Engineering, Durham University where he completed his PhD in geotechnical engineering and after 6 months in Geotechnical Observations (London) as a geotechnical engineer. Prior to that Sérgio was at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University for MSc research on landslides. Sérgio’s general research interest is to examine the hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of soils (natural, engineered and contaminated) in relation to environmental factors.
He is a member of the Royal Society’s Research Grants Scheme, Physical Sciences Board for 2013-2015 and, has held visiting positions at Kyoto University, USGS and University of Hannover between 2010-2012.
