Library and Computing Services

The University’s Information Services Directorate provides a range of services for disabled students. Some of the services are available to all students with a Cardiff University computing account whereas others will require you to provide some documentary evidence of your disability.

Extended Library Loans

Who can apply for extended library loans?

Students who have an illness, disability or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia may be entitled to use the extended library loans service.  You will have the opportunity to meet with an adviser to find out if this service meets your needs, for example, you might find it difficult to travel to and from the library, take longer than most to extract information when you read, or find making research notes very time consuming.

How do I make a request for extended Library Loans?

Requests for extended library loans have to be approved by the University’s Information Services Directorate and must be made via the Disability and Dyslexia Service and do require you to provide evidence of your illness, disability or specific learning difficulty.  Usually this will include a letter from a healthcare professional such as your GP, physiotherapist or occupational therapist, or a copy of an Educational Psychologist’s report. If you wish to discuss your eligibility for extended library loans further please contact the Disability and Dyslexia Service to speak to an adviser.

When should I make my request for extended library loans?

You can make a request for extended library loans at any time, although it is best to apply as early as possible to ensure you obtain support for your learning.

What extensions can be approved?

If your request is approved, you will be entitled to double the normal loan period on one to two week loans and on short-term loans as long as the item is not in heavy demand. The number of books on heavy demand will vary between each library and subject area.
