Staff may wish to follow the links next to this page to find out more about the implications for learning and teaching of Dyslexia, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment, Physical Disability and Mental Health difficulties.

Legislation

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 was amended by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001. From September 2002, the Act made it unlawful for HEIs to discriminate against students with disabilities and dyslexia. Follow the link to 'Disability Discrimination Act Part IV' for more details.  In 2005, the Act was further amended to create a positive duty on public authorities to promote equality of opportunity for disabled and non-disabled people. Further information regarding this and the Disability Equality Scheme is available, from the link to the Disability Discrimination Act Part V.

Disclosure of a Disability

The issue of confidentiality is an important one, particularly in light of the DDA Part IV. The 'Disclosure Policy' page offers practical guidelines and advice.
