Professor Jon Crowcroft - University of Cambridge
Opportunity is the Mother of Invention
In his Distinguished Lecture - Opportunity is the Mother of Invention - Professor John Crowcroft told the story of how a group of European researchers arrived at a design for communications software that seemed rather well suited to the new "Data Centric Networking" paradigm. He outlined the development of Haggle, which offers a new way for smartphone users to exchange files in a "social" way. Professor Crowcroft argued that although the system was originally designed to address networking problems experienced by mobile users, it turned out to be rather more general than expected. Recently, for example, it was used to track a flu epidemic.
Jon Crowcroft has been the Marconi Professor of Communications Systems in the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge since October 2001. He has worked in the area of Internet support for multimedia communications for over 30 years.
