Brief Career Profile
After qualification a brief period in dental practice was followed by a series of NHS and hospital appointments which led to me being appointed to my present position as Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. I have been the Admissions Tutor for the Dental School since 2007. I hold the following degrees /diplomas /qualifications: Bachelor of Dental Science (University of Dundee), Master of Science in Dentistry (University of Wales), Doctor of Philosophy (University of Cardiff), Fellowship in Dental Surgery (England), Intercollegiate Speciality Board Fellowship in Restorative Dentistry (UK), Diploma in Restorative Dentistry (Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics)(Edinburgh), Membership in Restorative Dentistry (Edinburgh), Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Leadership (with Distinction)(University of Leicester).
I was Cardiff University Dental Schools teacher of the year in 2005 and 2006 which is an initiative sponsored by the Medical Defence Union. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am topic leader for the Integrated Restorative Dentistry course in Cardiff and Deputy to the Director of the BDS Undergraduate Course.
Memberships / External Activities
I am currently a committee member of the British Society for Prosthetic Dentistry. I am a registered specialist in Restorative Dentistry. I act as an external examiner for the General Dental Council’s Overseas Registration Exam and parts 1 and 2 of the MFDS exam. I sit on the Editorial board of Dentistry magazine. I am a single figure (Category 1) golfer.
Awards / Prizes
I presented my PhD research (The replacement of plastic restorations in clinical dental practice and the effect that a simple training programme can have on the process) as a finalist in the Senior Colgate Prize (British Society for Dental Research) and the Schottlander Paper Prize (British Society for Prosthetic Dentistry). In 2011, I was invited to present the research I have carried out into the use of multiple mini-interviews in the selection of dental students at the ADEE conference in Antalya, Turkey.
