Lindsay Hunter graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1980. Early in her career, she established interests in both Paediatric Dentistry and academic dentistry, being a Lecturer in Children’s and Preventive Dentistry at the University of Wales College of Medicine from July 1981 to August 1984. In 1992, she returned to a substantive full-time academic post in Paediatric Dentistry following a period of fixed-term contract and part-time working surrounding the birth of 4 children. She subsequently completed specialist training at the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and, in an innovative collaboration with the University of Bristol Dental School, obtained a PhD. She was awarded internal promotion (on the basis of excellence in research) to Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry in 2000. In recognition of her contribution to the Wider Mission of the University, she was subsequently awarded internal promotion to Clinical Reader (2007) and a personal Chair (2009). She pursues a balanced career encompassing clinical practice, research and teaching. She has published widely and is recognised both nationally and internationally as an expert in her specialty.

Teaching Profile

Undergraduate

  • Principal roles: As Chair of the ‘Dentistry in the Wider Community’ Theme Panel, Professor Hunter has overall responsibility for placement teaching and for the vertical integration of Professionalism, Law and Ethics, Communication Skills, Information Management and Technology, and Dental Public Health within the curriculum. She provides both didactic and clinical (chair-side) teaching in Paediatric Dentistry; she also supervises undergraduate research
  • External examiner: Barts and The London Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry (Part 4 BDS)

Postgraduate

  • Principal roles: Professor Hunter provides didactic and clinical training in Paediatric Dentistry; she also supervises postgraduate degrees by research and the dissertation which comprises part of the MScD programme in Orthodontics. She is the All Wales Training Programme Director for specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry.
