Students working on Clinic

The Cardiff School of Dentistry is the only dental school in Wales and provides unique and important leadership in dental research, teaching and patient care.

The School is located at the University Dental Hospital on Cardiff University’s Heath Park campus, a 53-acre site shared with the University Hospital of Wales.  Progressive healthcare education and patient care are successfully integrated with world famous research facilities in this major teaching and research centre.  The academic and clinical staff within the School are recognised as being world-leading experts in their fields, providing valuable clinical services to the people of Wales in addition to their academic responsibilities.

The School has an annual intake of 80 students per year into Year 1 for the five-year  Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree with a total of over 290 registered students. There are also 40 students studying for HE Diplomas in Hygiene and/or Therapy.  The School offers postgraduate higher degrees by research and taught programmes, many of the latter being linked to specialist training, and currently have over 50 registered postgraduate students.

The School has modern facilities to support its clinical, educational and research activities.  The hospital completed an extensive 5-year, £11million refurbishment in 2003, and has modern clinics throughout.  Examples include the Paediatric Dentistry Clinic, which incorporated the first hospital-based Electronic Patient Record for dentistry in the UK, and the 34-chair Oral Health Clinic which underwent a £1.5million refurbishment in Summer 2010.  In terms of educational facilities, two new lecture theatres were built in 2005, and a new postgraduate student study suite and IT study rooms were introduced in 2009.  Significant investment has also been made to the School’s research infrastructure in recent years, with a new floor added to the University Dental Hospital containing a new translational research facility, and research laboratories being refurbished in 2010.

The sizeable investment in staff and facilities in recent years has helped the School achieve unprecedented levels of success.  In 2010 the School was ranked 1st among all UK dental schools for student satisfaction in the 2010 National Student Survey, whilst in 2008 the School was ranked in the top 5 dental schools in the UK for the quality of its research in the national Research Assessment Exercise.  In 2010 the School’s Violence & Society Research Group also won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education.
