We were awarded the Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2010. The award recognises our commitment to supporting career development of women at all stages from undergraduate through to professorial level.
Athena SWAN is a national scheme to promote women's careers and gender equality in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine. Athena SWAN principles are embedded in our activities throughout the School.
We actively support and promote work-life policies that are of benefit to all staff, enabling a high retention and career progression of both male and female staff. Key features include the ability to adapt to flexible working hours at all grades to accommodate preferred working practice and a recognition of family friendly core working hours between 9:30 to 3:30 to accommodate committee meetings and social gatherings.
In supporting career progression of both academic and professional services staff, we support staff attendance on a range of University Leadership and Management Development courses and national initiatives such as the the Aurora women-only leadership development initiative from the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and the Women in Universities Mentoring Scheme (WUMS).
We recently held a Women’s Career Development Workshop event involving inspirational speakers and workshops to identify barriers for promotion.
We also support our undergraduates with extensive training to better prepare them for the newly implemented UK-wide Dental Foundation interview process, achieving the 2nd highest BDS employability rate amongst UK dental schools.
