We are the only dental school in Wales, providing unique and important leadership in dental research, teaching and patient care.
We are located at the University Dental Hospital on Cardiff University's Heath Park campus, a 53 acre site shared with the University Hospital of Wales.
Progressive healthcare education and patient care are successfully integrated with world famous research facilities in this major teaching and research centre. Our academic and clinical staff are recognised as being world-leading experts in their fields. They provide valuable clinical services to the people of Wales in addition to their academic responsibilities.
Rankings and reputation
The sizeable investment in staff and facilities in recent years has helped us achieve unprecedented levels of success:
- We were ranked 1st among all UK dental schools for student satisfaction in the 2010 National Student Survey
- In 2009 our Violence and Society Research Group won the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education
- In 2008 we were ranked in the top 5 dental schools in the UK for the quality of our research in the Research Assessment Exercise.
We have modern facilities to support our clinical, educational and research activities.
The hospital completed an extensive 5-year, £11M refurbishment in 2003, and has modern clinics throughout. We have a Paediatric Dentistry Clinic, which incorporated the first hospital-based Electronic Patient Record for dentistry in the UK, and the 34-chair Oral Health Clinic which underwent a £1.5M refurbishment in summer 2010.
Our educational facilities include two new lecture theatres built in 2005, and a new postgraduate student study suite and IT study rooms introduced in 2009. Significant investment has also been made to our research infrastructure in recent years, with a new floor added to the Dental Hospital containing a new translational research facility, and research laboratories being refurbished in 2010.
