Erasmus+

Mae'r cynnwys hwn ar gael yn Saesneg yn unig.

The Erasmus+ programme offers EU students the opportunity to study with us for up to one year which will form part of your degree from your current institution.

We have links with many European universities, and whether you are here for a full year or a few months, you will benefit from excellent learning resources, support services and a wide range of events and activities.

It is also a fantastic opportunity for personal, social and academic development. You will meet students from other countries, make friends and get new perspectives on world culture.

If you wish to come and study with us as an Erasmus+ student, there must be an Inter-Institutional Agreement between your home institution and Cardiff University.

Application process

If you are coming to Cardiff as a traineeship student, we may not need to set up an Agreement. Your Erasmus+ Coordinator at your University will need to contact us directly to discuss this.

You will need to check with the Erasmus+ Office at your home university that there is a valid Agreement with Cardiff University in the subject you are studying. If there is no Agreement in place, it may be possible to set one up. The Erasmus+ Coordinator at your home University should contact us directly to discuss this.

Once an Agreement is in place, the Erasmus+ Office at your home university must send a nomination email to the Coordinator within the academic school you wish to study or work with at Cardiff University.

The nomination email should contain your name, email address, which academic school you will study or work with and when you would like to come to Cardiff University (e.g. Autumn term/Spring term/Full academic year). Make sure to check Cardiff University's term dates before submitting this nomination email.

Once the academic school in Cardiff has decided if your nomination is successful, you will be sent a link via email to an online application form. You must complete the application form prior to the start of your placement. Once you have submitted your online application form, the academic school at Cardiff University will send you an ‘offer’ of study by email. If you are happy with the conditions of the offer you receive, you should accept it as soon as possible.

Once you have accepted your offer, you will be emailed further information about your application, including:

Online enrolment should be completed prior to your arrival and you should receive instructions via email about how to complete this 3 weeks prior to the start date of your programme.

English language requirements

As part of the application process, incoming Erasmus+ students who do not require a visa to enter the UK are not required to provide us with proof of their level of English. Please be aware however that you will be required to study or work through the medium of English and therefore your level of English will need to be sufficient enough to manage your workload effectively.

If you require a visa to enter the UK, then as part of the visa application process you may need to provide the University with proof of your level of English.

Find more information about recognised English language qualifications.

Applying for visas

Short-term study visa

If you require a short term study visa to enter the UK, please check the UKVI website for more information about how to apply for this visa.

Tier 4 (general) student visa

If you require a Tier 4 (General) student visa to enter the UK, please check the UKVI website for more information about how to apply for this visa.

Studying as an Occasional Student

If an Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement does not exist and your university does not wish to create one, then it may possible to study at Cardiff University as an Occasional Student.

This means that you may be liable to pay fees but, if accepted, will have the same module choices as UK students. For more information about this method of study, please contact us.

There are a number of accommodation options available to you during your studies with us.

University residences

Full session students (September-June)

Our Residences Office can guarantee an offer of a single occupancy place in University residences if you are an Erasmus+ student studying with us for a full academic year. There are a number of University residences and student houses to choose from, offering catered, part-catered and self-catered residences. Around 70% of residences have their own study bedroom and bathroom. Standard residences have bathroom facilities which are shared between four to eight people. Self-catered residences have communal kitchen areas.

Find out about choosing the right accommodation for you, including comparison guides, the costs involved and how to book a room.

Part session students (studying for one semester)

Our Residences Office cannot guarantee part session students a place in University residences. If you are a part session student then you can still apply for a place in University residences, but it is advisable to also seek accommodation in the private landlord sector. We will send you further information regarding private accommodation once you have been accepted onto your Erasmus+ placement.

How to apply

Full session students (September-June)

If you are a full session Erasmus+ student, you can apply online for University residences as soon as you receive your username and password.

Part session students (Autumn semester only)

If you arriving in September and will study with us for the Autumn semester only, it is highly unlikely that University Residences will be able to offer you a place in University accommodation. This is due to the high number of students arriving in Cardiff at this time. University Residences will only be able to let you know if they are able to allocate you a place in late September. There is therefore a possibility that University Residences may be able to be able to offer you a place from the first week of October. You can contact the Residences Office prior to your arrival in Cardiff to check availability by emailing residences@cardiff.ac.uk or calling +44 (0)29 2087 4849.

However, if you are unable to wait to hear about the possibility of a room in University accommodation, we strongly recommend that you look for private accommodation on arrival in Cardiff. It is very difficult to find a house if you are not in Cardiff and we do not advise that you arrange long-term accommodation from overseas. It is best to arrive in Cardiff before the start of your course and reserve a room in a hostel, local guesthouse or hotel while you look for a suitable, private accommodation. This can be expensive so you will need to ensure you have enough funds to support you at the start of your placement.

Looking for private accommodation can be a stressful time, but we will do our best to help you. More information will be sent to you by the Erasmus+ Office via email, before the start of your placement.

Part session students (Spring semester only)

If you are arriving in January and will study with us for the Spring semester only, it is more likely that a number of vacancies will become available in University accommodation which can be offered to part session Erasmus+ students. We cannot guarantee this accommodation, but if you would like to apply online, you will be contacted by the Residences Office in December regarding availability.

Further information about how to apply for accommodation online can be found on the Cardiff University Residences webpages.

Private sector accommodation

There is a wide choice of private accommodation in Cardiff that is let by private landlords. However, some landlords may be reluctant to offer short-term tenancy agreements so it is important to research what they can offer carefully. If you do decide to look for private accommodation, the Residences Office has up-to-date lists of self-catering rooms, flats and houses for rent.

View these accommodation lists and find more information about renting private accommodation.

You may also wish to seek other students looking for accommodation by posting a message on our Facebook page.
