Food and rural development in Brazil – recent trends

Professor Sergio Schneider, Professor of Sociology of Rural Development and Food Studies at the Federal  University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil The seminar will discuss the recent changes related to food issues in Brazil and explore the role of civil society organizations and public policies in this process. Food issues have become important drivers for social change and form the basis of a renewed rural development pathway. Brazil is developing a new approach to food security through a set of policies; from public procurement such as the school feeding program and the purchase of food from family farmers to water and agroecology management. The presentation will also discuss the outcomes and possible lessons and that could be learned from these processes and the challenges of maintaining them in a scenario of crisis and fiscal austerity.
