Low carbon built environment project

Whole house energy retrofit

Our Low Carbon Built Environment (LCBE) Research Team have secured £3.4 million to implement replicable and affordable low carbon technologies in the built environment in Wales.

This investment is part of the £37.3 million programme, SPECIFIC, which will run from 2015 until 2023, led by Swansea University in partnership with Cardiff University, Akzo Nobel, NSG Pilkington, Tata Steel and a wide range of other business and academic partners. SPECIFIC is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, and by Innovate UK and EPSRC.

The LCBE Team are building on first hand knowledge from the design, construction and monitoring of previous projects including the energy positive SOLCER House, five low carbon retrofits and the Sustainable Building Envelope Centre (SBEC), all funded under the Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) programme.

Overview

Renewable energy supply, energy storage and reduced energy demand technologies are being combined to provide evidence and inform the stakeholder decision making process regarding the potential for carbon savings, energy savings and energy bill reductions.

The LCBE team are working closely with all relevant stakeholders including occupants, industry, local authorities, social housing providers and supply chains to ensure that low carbon solutions are practical and appropriate through all stages from planning, design, construction, to maintenance and operation.
