Journalism and media 'Esboniadur'

The aim of this project is to create an online resource, in the form of a series of searchable entries on the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s resource portal ‘Y Porth’.

This is an academic e-book that will be a contemporary and relevant guide covering the main concepts of journalism and the media in Wales and beyond. The definitions will be useful to university students, as well as school and college pupils interested in journalism and the media.

This will also be a useful tool for those who wish to start a career within the creative industries. An important asset to the next generation of journalists, communicators and academics, it will also be of interest to experienced practitioners working in the field of journalism.

Manylion

  • Translating and adapting existing textbook ‘Keywords in News and Journalism Studies’ (Zelizer, B. and Allan, S. (2010) Keywords in News and Journalism Studies. Maidenhead: Open University Press).
  • Consulting with industry, including BBC Cymru Wales, ITV Cymru Wales, S4C and Golwg.
  • Updating definitions and adding new keywords by drawing on current academic theory.
  • Interviewing journalists and academic peers to reflect current terminology within the industry and academia.

Canlyniadau

When all the definitions have been loaded to the online Esboniadur, we will produce a downloadable PDF that will be available through the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Resource Library.

This academic work will be added to the essential reading list on all Welsh language modules within JOMEC and will form a core part of journalism studies for students engaged with the provision. We hope that other universities will emulate this by considering it as a core resource for Welsh-speaking students and academics.

We launched the resource at the 2018 National Eisteddfod securing appropriate media attention.
