Urfan Khaliq is Professor of Public International and European Laws. He first joined the Law School in 1996 as a Lecturer and was subsequently Senior Lecturer and Reader before being appointed a Professor. Prior to joining Cardiff University he was a Research Assistant to Professor Christine Chinkin (now Professor of International Law, London School of Economics) at the Law Faculty of Southampton University. He is the author of a number of articles in leading law journals, chapters in edited collections as well as a monograph published by Cambridge University Press entitled "Ethical Foreign Policies of the European Union: A Legal Appraisal". This book was awarded the 2009 Universities Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) Book Prize for the work which makes 'the most substantial and original contribution to knowledge in the area of European Studies'. The book was also short-listed for the 2009 SLS Peter Birks Prize for outstanding contribution to legal scholarship. Professor Khaliq has taught, given conference papers or been a Research Fellow in numerous countries around the world. His research and teaching interests encompass: EU Law, Public International Law, International Human Rights Law, Foreign Policy and aspects of Islamic Law. He is also interested in the dialogue between International Law and International Relations and has developed post graduate courses in this area as part of the Cardiff LLM programme. He is a regular contributor to both BBC Wales and the BBC World Service on his areas of expertise. As an experienced PhD supervisor he always welcomes enquiries from potential research students in his areas of interest. He has also acted as an advisor to a number of NGOs and bodies such as the European Commission on various matters.
Professor Khaliq is an Advocate of the Punjab High Court, Pakistan and is part of various ongoing projects which seek to provide pro bono legal advice to street children in conflict with the law as well as helping with the training in international human rights law of the Pakistani judiciary and legal profession. He is also currently working with an NGO seeking to ensure certain groups of workers have their rights under international law enforced and upheld. He routinely provides expert evidence before courts in his areas of expertise. He is currently a member of the Research Consultants Panel at Matrix Chambers, Gray's Inn, London where he has been part of a team working on numerous cases before the UK Court of Appeal, UK Supreme Court, European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. He is also Professeur Invité in Public Law at the Université de Picardie- Jules Verne, Amiens.
He is writing two major books: a monograph on general principles of international law due for completion in 2020 and further a major textbook for Cambridge University Press due for completion after 2017.

A project on children's rights, international law and religious conflicts which is being funded by a number of governments with a view to changing the direction of the law.
