Robert Piencikowski is Curator of Music Manuscripts at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel and an Honorary Lecturer in Music at Cardiff University.
A French musicologist, he studied music and literature at both the Geneva Conservatoire and University, working with Roland Barthes, Yves Bonnefoy and Michel Butor, before moving to Paris where he was in charge of the music analysis course at IRCAM from 1980 to 1990.
He has published extensively on many aspects of twentieth-century and contemporary music, and is a noted authority on Pierre Boulez whose archives he curates at the Paul Sacher Foundation. He edited the facsimile edition of Tombeau from Pli selon pli (Universal Edition, 2010) and the same year received the distinction of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture.
