Denture acrylic biofilms: microbial composition, interactions and prevention.
Denture associated stomatitis (DS) affects up to 60% of denture wearers. The condition is caused by a biofilm on the denture in contact with the upper palate, leading to inflammation.
Microorganisms are ubiquitous in the oral cavity, and Candida is considered the causative microorganism of DS. However, the interactions between bacteria and Candida is important, as those that may have Candida in the mouth will not necessarily develop DS.
The aim of my PhD project is to comprehensively characterise DS biofilms, understand the complex interactions between bacteria and Candida in lab-based biofilm models, and investigate how host cells, including the immune system, respond to such biofilm infections.
