Diversity of Catalysis International Summer School

The School of Chemistry recently hosted a group of students for Cardiff University’s International Summer School on the Diversity of Catalysis.

The School is home to the internationally renowned Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI), making it the perfect location for students to explore the differing types of catalysts and catalytic applications supported by renowned research staff specialising in all areas of catalysis and excellent teaching facilities. The CCI’s research is focused on finding solutions to current real-world problems, as well as improving catalytic processes already in use. This approach forms the basis of the Diversity of Catalysis Summer School, which provides a through grounding in both theory and practical skills.

During the two week long summer school, students took part in hands-on sessions covering organic synthesis, molecular modelling, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, spectroscopy, dynamics and characterisation in order to gain a thorough understanding of the integral role catalysts play in chemistry. Students were also able to experience life at university, improve their English language skills through the sessions and additional language lessons, undertake visits to local industrial sites and see differing aspects of Welsh culture as part of the programme.

The International Summer Schools are targeted towards undergraduates or those who have recently graduated. The programme is designed to give students a sophisticated knowledge of the subject area, provide hands-on experience and an insight into life at a leading UK university.
