Distinguished Annual Lecture Series brings eminent ancient historian to Wales

Professor Hans Beck
Director of Classical Studies at McGill, Professor Hans Beck gives the School's 2017 Distinguished Lecture.

Renowned ancient historian Professor Hans Beck exchanges Canada for Cardiff to deliver Towards a Local History of Ancient Greece.

Author of the ground-breaking study Polis und Koinon,editor of A Companion to Ancient Greek Government, and co-editor of various other volumes,Professor Beck is Director of Classical Studies at McGill in Montreal, Quebec.

The German-Canadian scholar specializes in the history and culture of the ancient Greek world, with a thematic focus on federalism, polis governance, and notions of the local. His research also extends to the study of the political culture of ancient Rome, the exercise of aristocratic rule in antiquity, and ancient historiography.

Leading international scholar Professor Dr Peter Funke responds to the Distinguished Lecture. Vice-President of the German Research Foundation, the illustrious academic is also Director of the Institute for Ancient History at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.

In 2015 Professors Beck and Funke jointly co-edited Federalism in Greek Antiquity (Cambridge University Press).

The School of History, Archaeology and Religion’s Annual Distinguished Lecture for 2017 Towards a Local History of Ancient Greece takes place on 7 March (5.15pm) in the University's Main Building (Wallace Lecture Theatre, room 0.33).

All are welcome. Free, advance booking is recommended. A post-lecture reception follows the public lecture in the Viriamu Jones Gallery (Main Building foyer).
