Cardiff postgraduate scoops New Welsh Writing Award

8 Gorffennaf 2016

PhD student Nathan Llewelyn Munday

A Cardiff University PhD student has been awarded second prize in the 2016 New Welsh Writing Awards.

Nathan Llewelyn Munday accepted the award for Seven Days, A Pyrenean Trek, in which a deceptively simple hike with his father becomes a timeless, scholarly, rich, human, engaging and heartfelt Odyssey.

His creative piece employs European creation myths to map the highs and lows of the grand narrative.

Nathan said: "I was thrilled to come second in such a prestigious writing award. It has given me the confidence to continue writing alongside my academic studies and to aim high whenever I write anything whether it's an essay or a piece of travel writing."

Nathan wins a week-long residential course of his choice at Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre in Gwynedd, north Wales. Seven Days, A Pyrenean Trek will be published in extract form in the autumn edition of New Welsh Reader (112) on 1st September.

The New Welsh Writing Awards were held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in the capital on 7 July.
