We're proud to announce a new 10 credit Postgraduate level standalone module in Counselling Skills for Genomics, open for bookings now.

Genetics and Genomics are an integral part of our healthcare service and the University's range of Genetics modules will enhance your skills, knowledge and insight in the growing sector of genetic healthcare.

Our teaching staff have many years experience providing genetic and genomic counselling as part of multidisciplinary teams working in NHS clinical genetics services, including delivery of genomic sequencing in the NHS.

Furthermore, our teaching staff are also internationally recognised for their world-leading research in genetic and genomic counselling, and also teach genomic counselling externally in the UK and in Europe.

Our modules provides a practical and theoretical foundation in genetics, genomics, and research methods for those working in clinical healthcare, who wish to learn more about genetics and genomics, or who are considering a career in genetic counselling.

About this course

This is an introduction to counselling skills for genomics. Students undertaking this module will be taught how to communicate and provide appropriate support to individuals and their families. Development of counselling skills will be achieved via theoretical and practical sessions.  Students will understand the importance of a family history and communication of pathogenic and/or uncertain results.

Suitable for
Health professionals whose practice includes genetic or genomic testing, or discussion of genetic/genomic issues. This includes those working in primary care or specialist areas such as paediatrics, cardionlogy, neurology, oncology, fetal medicine, opthalmology and haematology.
