Creative industries course launched

12 Gorffennaf 2018

Students working together creatively
Applications are now open for MA Cultural and Creative Industries.

A new course that will provide graduates with the skills needed to meet the challenges of the cultural and creative industries has been launched.

MA Cultural and Creative Industries has been designed by Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture and both students and staff will work closely with the Creative Cardiff network.

Applicants starting the course this September will do so in the School's new home located in the heart of Cardiff's vibrant media centre, Central Square, next to BBC Cymru/Wales and Trinity Mirror.

Balancing theory and professional study

For the first-time in Wales students will have an opportunity to study the cultural and creative industries in a research-led academic environment.

As well as developing a critical understanding of the key theories, and the issues and debates about the way in which these industries operate, students will actively engage in professional study with creative businesses, organisations and practitioners throughout the course.

Employability related skills

Through a combination of practical assignments, workshops and guest lectures, students will learn how to manage social media in a creative context as well as explore the ways in which creative practitioners are connecting with their audiences, embracing digital channels and utilising mixed media methods.

Work placement

A professional work placement is included as a core part of the course and aims to introduce students to the requirements facing them as they consider entering the creative industries workforce.

Course Director Dr Julie Brown said, "What makes this course so different is its combination of leading-edge research, professional practice and industry engagement, which means we can offer a balance of theory and professional expertise.

"The creative industries are one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the UK and Cardiff has a particularly dynamic creative sector, so this is an exciting opportunity for graduates or those already with professional experience wishing to gain a nationally recognised qualification to come and study with us."

Applications for the course are open and further details can be found on Cardiff University's course website.
