Sustainable Places is the new home to Project Seagrass

At Sustainable Places we are pleased to announce that we are now home to marine conservation NGO Project Seagrass.

Project Seagrass was formed in 2013 by our Research Assistant BenjaminJones and PhD student Richard Lilley (RJ) while they were conducting research for their MRes degrees at Swansea University. Ben and RJ discovered just how little people in the UK knew about seagrass, and the important roles that seagrass habitats play in coastal ecosystems. Globally, over a billion people live within 50km of a seagrass meadow, yet only a small fraction of these people even know that seagrass exists and evidence suggests that this trend holds true for the UK too.

Project Seagrass aims to change this, and is dedicated to advancing the conservation of seagrass through education, influence, research and action. The team, now made up of Research Assistant Benjamin Jones, PhD student Richard Lilly and Research Fellow Leanne Cullen-Unsworth at Sustainable Places in Cardiff University as well as Richard Unsworth a Research Officer at Swansea University, are working to enhance awareness for seagrasses and have run extensive social media campaigns as well as hosted workshops and events on and around the Llyn Peninsula, home to Wales' largest seagrass meadow. They have also hosted workshops in Borneo and Indonesia and have been trying to change the attitude of people towards seagrass across the Mediterranean.
