An event to celebrate the formation of a new research group focusing on maths education has taken place at the School of Mathematics.

Professor Dame Celia Hoyles from University College London helped to formally launch the group at the special event, and led a discussion on the theme, Windows on Advanced Mathematics: some ideas and implications on the theory and practice of university mathematics education.

The School’s new Mathematics Education Research Group (MERG) is focused on developing and evaluating new modes of learning and teaching mathematics in response to ongoing social and technological change. The group is interested in advancing the theory and practice of university mathematics education, actively gathers evidence to assess the effectiveness of different modes of teaching, and serves to support teachers and lecturers to develop their scholarship of learning and teaching.

Head of School Professor Tim Phillips said: “I am very pleased to announce the establishment of this new research group. This is an exciting new venture which gives formal recognition to a community with interests in teaching-related mathematics scholarship and research that already exists in the School. It will facilitate ongoing discussion and development of effective learning in university mathematics education by all academic staff.”
