Tackling Cancer Together

ECSCRI tackling cancer together

Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer and Wales is working together to help tackle cancer more effectively.

Tackling Cancer Together, Saturday November 25, showcases how Welsh organisations are working together for better cancer diagnosis, prevention, treatment and care. The Cardiff event celebrates the collaboration between charities, organisations and researchers across Wales, to improve the way we treat, diagnose and care for cancer across the world.

The European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute, based within Cardiff University, was set up to better the understanding of cancer stem cells, with the ultimate aim of developing new therapies that can make a difference to the lives of cancer patients.

Researchers from the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute will be taking part in Tackling Cancer Together in Yr Hen Lyfrgell in November, to share how their world-leading research is targeting cancer.

The rugby-themed cancer awareness event brings together cancer charities and organisations together to share what is happening in Wales, promoting cancer care, research and prevention.

Tackling Cancer Together takes places in Cardiff’s bustling city centre during the Welsh Autumn International rugby game, where the Welsh Rugby Union takes on the All Blacks in the Principality Stadium.

The fun, interactive family event is organised by the Wales Cancer Partnership and will feature an Escape the Lab experience, a 3D tour of a mobile support unit and engaging talks from cancer scientists.

The European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute will be within the research zone of the event, with activities to raise awareness for the cutting-edge research happening within the institute – including a cell sorting competition, a microscope practical and 3D protein models.

Matt Smalley, Professor at the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute, will also be hosting a talk, discussing the concept of cancer stem cells and his work investigating their role in breast cancer.

Matt said: “Teamwork isn’t just for rugby, it takes a team to tackle cancer.

“Cancer charities, hospitals, organisations and researchers in Wales are working together to tackle cancer and this event is a great opportunity to find out about reducing cancer risk, cancer research in Wales, as well as what you can do on a personal level to provide support to friends or family who are living with a cancer diagnosis.”

With participating organisations working across research, cancer services, and care and support, the event is set to be informative and enlightening, with games, hands-on activities, talks and information stands. Tackling Cancer Together also provides the opportunity to talk to representatives of all the major cancer charities and research organisations in South Wales to learn about the latest news in cancer care, research and treatment.
