Changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELTS)

There have been important changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELTS) for visa purposes.

These changes do not affect people from the European Union, European Economic Area, Switzerland and 'majority English speaking countries' as defined by the UK Home Office.

To find out more, please read our guidance before applying for a test.

To get started, please enter your details online at the British Council website. Once you have completed this, you'll then need to email us the following documents within 24 hours to secure your place:

  • Scanned copy of your passport or national identity card (EU citizens only).
  • Payment of  £165 for 2017 test dates  (either a completed IELTS payment form or a postal order made payable to 'Cardiff University').

If you're under 18 at the time of taking the test, then you'll also need to include an informed consent form.

IELTS is not recommend for under-16s.

To apply by post or in person, you'll need to download and complete the application form and attach:

  • A copy of your passport or national identity card (EU citizens only).
