Funding calculator

The Student Funding Calculator is designed to give you a broad indication of the funding that could be available from your award authority and Cardiff University along with the fees you will pay. To determine your full eligibility, the University (and where applicable your student funding authority) will undertake a full assessment once you have applied. The information you receive via this calculator is only indicative and must be considered in the context of individual circumstances and criterion as detailed by the relevant providers of loans, grants and bursaries.

First degree

If you have, or have had, any experience of Higher Education even if you have not completed a degree then you should check your entitlement to student funding with your award authority. (See below for a listing of award authorities).

Permanent Address

The actual determination of eligibility and awards is governed by the Student Support Regulations and determined by the relevant award authority depending on your individual circumstances and where you live prior to the start of your course.

If your permanent address has changed in the last 3 years,

• or you have not been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last 3 years
• or you are a migrant worker or child of a migrant worker from the EU
• or you are a refugee, asylum seeker or have exceptional leave to remain

you should check your eligibility for student funding and category of fee status with the award authority where you currently reside.

Your permanent address/domicile will affect your fee status and therefore the fees you are charged and the financial support available to you. Further information is available at: www.ukcisa.org.uk/student.

Postcode

Additional bursaries are available for students from lower income households within the Welsh Government's Community First post coded areas.

Household income

Household income for single students /applicants aged under 25 is normally their parents' income.

You should insert the annual income used in your gross household income for tax year 2011-12 tax year minus:

• Pension contributions which attract tax relief.
• £1130 for each eligible parent's child (other than the student) who is wholly or mainly financially dependent on the parent.

If your household income has decreased by more than 15% since tax year 2011-12 tax year you can request a current year income assessment based on tax year 2013-14 from your award authority.

If you are unsure what your household income is then try putting in some example figures eg £15000, £20000, £25000, £30000, £35000 etc.

Time in care

This applies to students who have been in care for a minimum of 3 months (continuous or cumulative) since their 16th birthday, or over 6 months since their 14th birthday, and have been in care in the last 10 years.

NHS funded courses

Places on these courses are normally funded by the NHS. However you should confirm that your place is NHS funded to ensure that this funding is applicable to you.

EU and Channel islands students - funding can vary and students should confirm eligibility for this funding independently. Overseas students are not eligible for NHS funding.

Medicine and Dental courses are only funded by the NHS in the 5th year of study. 5th year or accelerated Medicine students and 5th year dentists from Northern Ireland and Scotland should refer to their relevant NHS body for funding information as this differs from that listed.

Fees for Channel Island students studying Medicine and Dentistry courses

Medical students paying island fees will pay a fee of £10500 for the first two years of the course and £24675 for the remainder of the course.

Dental students paying island fees will pay a fee of £10500 for the first year of the course and £24675 for the remainder of the course.

Fees for international students studying Medicine and Dentistry courses

Medical students paying  international fees will pay a fee of £16000 for the first two years of the course and £29000 for the remainder of the course.

Dental students paying island fees will pay a fee of £16000 for the first year of the course and £29000 for the remainder of the course.

Maintenance loan

A maintenance loan is available from your award authority for living costs to all eligible UK students. The figures quoted have been taken from the relevant award authority website calculators but students must confirm the actual award they will receive from their award authority. This is repayable after your have completed your degree and are earning more than £21,000 a year.

Assembly Learning grants and Maintenance grants

Students whose household income is assessed as under £50,020 in Wales or £42611 in England may qualify for a non repayable grant in addition to the loan to help cover living costs.

Tuition Fee Loan

All eligible UK and EU students can qualify for a non means tested tuition fee loan. This is repayable after your have completed your degree and are earning more than £21,000 a year.

The figures provided on loans and grants are taken from and can be confirmed on your award authority's online calculator. The figures shown here cover a range of £50 income bands. Therefore the loan, grants and bursaries for any particular income may vary slightly from the figures shown.
