This field course will introduce you to the biodiversity, functions and processes of coral reef communities, the multiple threats they are facing, and to methods of assessment and investigation.

The course is entirely field-based and will involve extensive periods of snorkelling/diving and time spent in and on the water in a tropical climate.

The first part of the course will focus on training in methods and ID skills (including dive training on Gaya) and will involve group projects. The second part will be dedicated to designing and executing your own individual project relevant to conservation.

Depending on Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice you will be based at either:

  • our Sugud Islands Marine Research Centre (SIMRC) on Billean Island which is part of the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA)
  • Gaya Island which is part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park.

There is a fee associated with this field course. Further information can be provided on request.
