Cardiff Work Environment Research Centre (CWERC)

Cardiff Work Environment Research Centre (CWERC) undertakes research to understand the relationship between health, safety and well-being in the working environment. It is a Joint Research Centre and supported by the Schools of Psychology and Social Sciences.
It provides an integrated identity for the considerable research expertise on the work environment in these Schools and other parts of the university.
Cardiff University has approved the establishment of the Centre to conduct the following activities:
- Foster the development of a university wide focus for research activity in the area of the work environment, health and safety, work and well-being, rehabilitation and related subjects and provide an authoritative source of expert advice on these topics
- Promote research locally, nationally and internationally through undertaking seminars, workshops, conferences and the publication of working papers
- Develop national and international links
- Undertake briefings, contribute advice and commissioned work with trade unions, employers, insurance organisations, community organisations, professional, regulatory and related bodies.
- Seek support from research councils government departments and elsewhere to undertake major cross cutting research across the range of expertise represented by the Centre
- Develop linked educational activity, focused at a postgraduate and professional levels.
- Edit and further develop the journal Policy and Practice in Health and Safety, published by IOSH
As well as being a centre of excellence for research, CWERC is well placed to contribute to future policy development in the UK especially in relation to implementation / evaluation of health and safety, job retention and return to work initiative. Within Wales, the Centre is ideally situated to help generate and review the evidence base for better understanding of health and well-being aspects of the Welsh Assembly Government’s programmes on the development of economic activity.
CWERC is sponsored by Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Remploy and the Royal Mail. It has an advisory board with membership from these organizations, regulatory agencies and the research community.
