Dr Mara Miele has been awarded a 2011 Ashby Prize for her innovative paper “The taste of happiness: free-range chicken”.
The paper presents the results of an on-farm assessment of the welfare of free-range chickens in the UK, carried out by adopting the Welfare Quality® protocol. This evaluation encompasses many aspects of animals' lives, including animals' negative and positive emotions and suggests that animals' 'happiness' can be measured and can become part of an overall score of welfare.
The Ashby Prizes are awarded by Environment and Planning A for the most innovative papers published in the journal each year.
