Postgraduate Study

The School of City and Regional Planning also provides a range of opportunities for postgraduate study. This allows students to extend their studies and also complete the educational requirements of a wide range of professional organisations. Undergraduates will have already had opportunity to select option modules related to the School’s specialisms and many students choose to progress to the School’s Masters courses. These are internationally recognised courses and relate closely to the School’s recognised areas of research expertise.

Students completing the BSc City and Regional Planning usually progress to one of the specialist Masters courses offered in the School. These are all recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute as specialist masters courses and, in conjunction with the BSc City and Regional Planning, provide all of the education requirements for membership of the RTPI. Some of the courses are also recognised by other professional bodies. The specialist masters courses offered by the School are:

MA Urban Design is delivered in collaboration with the Welsh School of Architecture. It has an inter-disciplinary focus and develops professional design skills through extensive project work and studio-based learning.

MSc Transport and Planning aims to provide students with the capability of contributing to effective policy-making and transport management both in the UK and overseas. It is also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).

MSc Sustainability and Environmental Policy links theoretical debates on sustainability with practical strategies for the management of environmental change at all spatial scales. It is also accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

MSc Regeneration Studies is run jointly with the Cardiff School of Social Sciences and examins the wide range of regeneration issues in urban and rural contexts. It is also accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Students completing the BSc Geography (Human) and BSc Geography (Human) and Planning courses can choose from the specialist masters courses, or the following courses:

MSc Geography, Policy and Practice allows students to develop their geographical knowledge and skills to an advanced level and also apply these to practical policy issues.

MSc Planning Practice and Research is a one-year, combined masters programme recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute. It allows a student to attain all of the educational requirements for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

MSc International Planning and Development is a one year, combined masters programme recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute. It allows a student to attain all of the educational requirements for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Students are advised on the various options for postgraduate study and their suitability for different career paths.
