The BSc City and Regional Planning is a professionally-recognised degree that provides the essential foundations for pursuing a professional career in the fields of planning and development. The course equips students with a detailed understanding of the nature of the social, economic, political and environmental processes that shape cities and regions, and the various ways in which planning schemes and proposals can improve the quality of places and peoples’ lives.

The course gives students the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in the key policy areas of spatial planning, local and regional economic development, site planning and design, property development, environmental planning and governance. Students are encouraged to understand and discuss these issues within the context of wider debates about sustainable development and social justice.

The School offers two routes through the course. You can complete the degree in three years or, alternatively, choose to study the degree as a four-year course with a professional placement year in year three of the course. Students can transfer between the two pathways through the course up until the end of the second year. The placement year is certificated by City and Guilds as a Licentiate Award in Planning and provides students with an interim qualification.

The School works closely with professional bodies to ensure that the course meets the expected outcomes for professional membership. The BSc City and Regional Planning is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and provides all of the educational requirements for membership. The course is also recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a spatial planning degree. Students graduating from the BSc City and Regional Planning can pursue one of the School’s specialist Masters degrees to complete the RTPI’s educational requirements for membership.

Course Structure and Content

The BSc City and Regional Planning has a modular structure with students taking six double modules in each academic year. These include core and option modules, with students able to select specialist options in the final year of the course. The first year of the course provides a foundation in core spatial planning issues, which students build on with more advanced modules in the second year. The second year is also a key year for students who are progressing to a placement. The placement year, where applicable, is spent with an employing organisation in a structured period of placement learning. The final year of the course allows students to reflect on their learning across the course and introduces students to a range of specialisms.
Please note that course structure may be subject to change.
