In December, Head of School Professor Paul Milbourne and Senior Lecturer Dr Li Yu joined Professor George Boyne, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, in a visit to Hefei, Auhui Province, China to sign an Agreement of Cooperation with Professor Yucheng WU, Vice president of Hefei University of Technology to establish and launch the China-UK Research Centre for Eco-Cities and Sustainable Development.
The cooperation between the two universities is based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a dual MSc degree programme in 2008. Mutual trust has been established since then. Future cooperation will involve the identification and development of common research interests.
The joint Research Centre has been established in order to research and explore together global climate change. The Centre will lead on a number of specific agreed projects, including but not limited to the following areas:
- Low Carbon Eco-City
- Integrated Urban-Rural Development
- Urban Public Policy and Administration
- Spatial Environmental Analysis
- Culture and Historical Heritage.
The Centre will seek to promote lesson learning on urban development and rural change in Europe and China.
The launch of the Centre was one of a number of activities undertaken during the 7 day visit to China.
The Cardiff University group visited a number of Chinese universities both in Beijing and Hefei and Paul Milbourne was invited to give a lecture to the staff and postgraduate taught and research students at Renmin University (one of the top 10 Chinese universities).
Also incuded was a visit to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development, China and a meeting with Professor Baoxing Qiu, the vice minister responsible for urban and rural development and its research in China. At the meeting a Cardiff University certificate of Honorary Visiting Professorship was awarded to Professor Qiu.
