Mr Andrew Dakin
Career Profile
In addition to teaching at Cardiff University since 2005, I have worked for 35 years in the public, private and voluntary sectors. During this time I have developed a significant experience in the regeneration of ‘place’ and the development of people. The diverse positions of responsibility I have held and the influence this has afforded, has helped me to develop a holistic view of ‘life and the world’ and the necessary leadership skills that are essential to facilitate the successful management and implementation of regeneration initiatives.
The first physical regeneration project I undertook was in Swindon in 1978.This was the development of industrial workshops for business start-ups. Since then I have lead the delivery of a large number of development and regeneration projects in the public and private sectors. In addition I have undertaken a variety of roles in the voluntary sector from 1972 onwards and I have worked with people from many diverse backgrounds.
I am a regeneration specialist and a general ‘change manager’ with an ability to bridge the gap between vision, strategy and project delivery. My career development has been as follows:
- Deputy Chief Executive, Centre Regeneration Excellence Wales (CREW) -ongoing.
- Director of Regeneration, The Newport Urban Regeneration Company. 2006-2010.
- Project Director and Area Development Manager, Welsh Development Agency. 1991-2006.
- Development Surveyor, Britannia PLC, Cheltenham. 1990-1991.
- Development Manager, Stonechester Ltd, Bath. 1982-1990.
- Property Manager and Development Surveyor, British Rail Property Board, Bristol. 1976-1982.
- The Lee Abbey Community. 1972-1973.
Local regeneration strategies and supporting policy guidance where I have made a contribution to their writing includes:

- The Planning Officers Society For Wales with WAG. A Model Design Guide for Wales residential development. 2005.
- Newport: A Food and Regeneration Strategy. 2010.
